MAJEK FASHEK, who toured the world with the sound of African reggae with hits such as ‘Send Down the Rain’ and ‘Prisoner of Conscience’ has died in New York, June 1, 2020.
His manager and publicist for about seven years Omenka Uzoma said Tuesday morning, “The legend has gone to meet with the Lord,” in a video he uploaded on Instagram. “Let’s celebrate him, his achievement, his family”. He added.
Mr Uzoma did not disclose the cause of death, which could be deliberate, considering his past refusal to disclose the nature of the artist’s illness.
The legend, who is also known as THE RAIN MAKER, is greatly remembered for his album ‘Prisoner of Conscience’ which had the single’ Send down the Rain’.
The single was a major hit worldwide, gaining him multiple awards and recognitions, namely; Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria’s album of the year in 1989, which was followed by ‘So Long for Too Long’ in 1991.
In the early 2000s, Majek, whose stage name came from his full name Majekodunmi Fasheke, featured in some local film productions in Nigeria, including ‘Mark of the Beast’.
Later on in his life, the reggae legend received multiple allegations of excessive drug use and illness, of which he declined to publicly confirm.
In 2019, there were rumours of his death. Rumours which were debunked by his publicist, on the 15th of September 2019.
The late legend is survived by his four children and his ex wife Rita.
Even though Majek Fashek had struggles, like everyone of us, he will be fondly remembered by those who grew up in the era of his music.
