Sometimes, the only way to overcome storms in our lives is to walk through them. In today’s first reading, we encounter the prophet Elijah in a moment of despair. He was hiding in a cave, feeling defeated and abandoned, after his encounter with the prophets of Baal, and Jezebel’s subsequent promise to kill him. When God appears to him, God encourages him to go back and continue his mission. God doesn’t abandon him, but speaks to him in a gentle whisper, renewing his faith and giving him the strength to carry on.
Similarly, in today’s Gospel reading, we find the disciples of Jesus caught in a storm while crossing the sea. Fearful and uncertain, they witnessed Jesus walking on water towards them. Peter, filled with courage, asks Jesus to command him to come to Him on the water. As long as Peter keeps his eyes fixed on Jesus, he is able to walk on water. But when he allows doubt to creep in, he begins to sink. But even then, Jesus stretches out His hand and saves him, reminding him of the power of faith.
Friends, in our daily lives, we often face numerous difficulties and uncertainties too. Economic hardships, political instability, and social unrest can lead us to lose hope and question God’s presence in our lives. However, just as God spoke to Elijah and saved Peter in their moments of doubt, He is also present with us in our struggles. We must therefore remember that God’s gentle whisper and outstretched hand are always there to guide and support us. We must remain steadfast in our faith, trusting that God will provide and lead us through the storms of life. Our collective faith and perseverance will enable us to overcome the challenges we face.
Let us Pray
Heavenly Father, may we find inspiration in the faith of Elijah and Peter, and may we be reminded of your constant presence and love in our lives. As we continue our journey, increase our faith, that we may trust in your power to guide us towards a brighter future, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
