Friday of the Thirtieth Week in Ordinary Time, Year II. Phil. 1:1-11; Lk 14:1-6
The story is told of how a Nigerian Cardinal went with two of his diocesan priests to see the Holy Father, Pope Francis. When the first priest was introduced as a student of canon law, the saintly Pope looked at him and said, “watch it friend, you may be on your way to losing human compassion…” The above illustration certainly isn’t against canon law, or any law for that matter. However, it is against an attitude to law(s) that negates love, compassion and understanding.
Friends, Jesus Christ healed on the Sabath not because He had little regard for the laws of the Sabath, but because in the application of laws, human compassion must come first. We must therefore look carefully at ourselves and revisit our attitude to laws. If we truly love one another as we ought, we would find better ways of interpreting laws. This is precisely why St. Paul lauds the Philippians in today’s first reading, and prays that their love for one another will wax stronger. In a world where we can choose to be anything, let us choose to be kind.
God bless your weekend ahead.
