A Birthday Reflection That Challenges Every Nigerian
Peter Obi has said that his 65th birthday, celebrated on July 19, 2026, was not an occasion for elaborate festivities but a moment of profound reflection, gratitude to Almighty God, and a renewed commitment to serving humanity.
According to the former Anambra State governor, advancing in age should inspire individuals to look back with thanksgiving, assess the journey of life, and consider how their remaining years can be devoted more meaningfully to the service of God and society.
He observed that while birthdays in countries with functional institutions and better living standards may naturally attract grand celebrations, Nigeria’s current realities demand sober reflection. Despite the nation’s immense human and natural resources, he noted that millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with poverty, unemployment, poor healthcare, and limited opportunities. He stressed that such realities should encourage citizens to focus less on personal celebrations and more on contributing to nation-building.
Obi explained that he had always regarded birthdays as opportunities for thanksgiving, introspection, and renewed dedication to service. He said he had come to the conviction that the greatest celebration of life lies not in what one receives from others but in the number of lives one positively impacts.
Reflecting on his years in business, the corporate sector, and as Governor of Anambra State, he stated that he had consistently viewed every position of privilege as an opportunity to improve the lives of others rather than as a personal entitlement. He recalled that whenever individuals or organisations sought to honour him with expensive gifts or lavish ceremonies, he encouraged them to redirect those resources towards projects with lasting social value, including schools, hostel blocks, and other facilities that continue to benefit the less privileged.
He maintained that the greatest honour anyone could receive was not found in gifts, public recognition, or ceremonies, but in knowing that their life had made a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
To mark his 65th birthday, Obi said he began the day with a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha, where he expressed gratitude to God for His protection, guidance, and countless blessings over the years. He later visited St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, where he donated ₦10 million to support the hospital’s mission of providing quality healthcare to the community.
After touring the hospital, Obi said he was deeply moved by the condition of patients receiving treatment, many of whom might not have the financial means to settle their medical bills. He described the experience as a reminder that true leadership is rooted in compassion and in caring for those who cannot repay acts of kindness.
He emphasized that hospitals and schools remain among the greatest investments any society can make because hospitals preserve lives while schools shape the future. Supporting both, he said, is not merely an act of charity but an enduring investment in humanity and national development.
Obi further disclosed that he would dedicate the remainder of the month to visiting one school or hospital, making modest contributions as a practical expression of gratitude to God. He said he wanted his birthday to be remembered not as a celebration centred on himself but as one focused on humanity.
Concluding his reflection, he prayed for God to grant him continued strength, wisdom, and humility to serve. He affirmed that at 65, he was more convinced than ever that the true measure of a person’s life is not the wealth accumulated or the honours received but the positive difference made in the lives of others. He also prayed for God’s blessings upon Nigeria, expressing hope for a more united, inclusive, and compassionate nation where citizens work together to build a better future.
