Micah 7:14-15,18-20; Matt. 12:46-50
Imagine your father is the President of a country. As his child, you might expect unrestricted access to him at any time. Yet there will be moments when matters of national importance require his full attention. It wouldn’t mean he loves you any less; it simply means his responsibility to the nation must take precedence at that moment. Something similar happens in today’s Gospel. When Jesus is told that His mother and His relatives are waiting to see Him, He uses the opportunity to teach his hearers that our deepest bond is not one of blood but of obedience to His Father’s will.
Friends, this is a hard one to swallow. How am I supposed to see sister A or brother B, as more of a sibling to me than my own blood siblings? But here’s the thing! That we’re first sons and daughters of God, and heirs of the Father, before we’re blood related, need not reduce, but ENHANCE our filial relationships. Jesus does not disrespect his biological family; he rather uses the opportunity to deepen our understanding of what family should be. When we strive to live right and do God’s will, we become even more than blood relatives of Jesus and of one another. Let us pray with the Prophet Micah, that God may have mercy on us and forgive us for the times we’ve put our selfish interests before God’s, Amen
