Today’s Gospel, Luke 8:19–21, gives us a beautiful reminder: belonging to Christ is not merely about being close to Him physically; it is about allowing His Word to shape the way we live.
Jesus says, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and put it into practice.”
Hearing is easy. Practising is the challenge.
We hear God’s Word at Mass. We read Scripture. We listen to homilies and receive good advice. Yet the real question is: What happens after we hear?
The Word of God becomes powerful in us when it transforms our attitudes, our conversations, our decisions and our relationships.
When Scripture tells us to forgive, do we forgive?
When Christ teaches us to love, do we love even when it is inconvenient?
When He calls us to humility, can we surrender our pride?
Mary, the Mother of Jesus, gives us the perfect example. She did not merely hear God’s message; she welcomed it, trusted it and lived it. Her life teaches us that genuine faith is expressed through obedience.
Today, let us not allow God’s Word to remain merely beautiful words in our Bibles. Let it become visible in our lives.
Someone may never read the Gospel today—but they may encounter Christ through our kindness, patience, honesty and forgiveness.
Lord, open my ears to hear Your Word, my heart to receive it, and my life to practise it. May my actions become a living testimony of Your love. Amen.
