Wednesday of the Twenty-Third Week in Ordinary Time. Year II. 1 Cor.7:25-31; Luke 6:20-26
Reading through Luke’s Sermon on the Plain, we immediately realise that Jesus takes what the world values and reverses them. True blessedness does not consist in wealth, fame or festivities, as the world expects. It is those who struggle now who will receive a lasting reward. This is unusual. Those Jesus calls ‘happy’, are those the world considers sad. And those Jesus consigns to sadness are actually those we consider happy in the world.
Friends, Paul speaks with urgency to the People of Corinth today. He tells them it’s time to stop clinging to the world. If you’re married, treat your wife well and do not seek to be divorced. If you’re not married, do not kill yourself over it, as though marriage means everything. In essence, the celibate and non celibate states mean nothing if they do not point us to God. Hence, we must strive to do whatever we can for God’s kingdom here on earth. When people clap for us too much, it may well be that we have lost the way, and when they persecute us too much, it may well be that we are truly on the path to the Kingdom.
