WHEN FAITH REFUSES TO LET THE LIGHT GO OUT
Readings: Ephesians 2:12–22; Psalm 85; Luke 12:35–38
What happens when you have prayed for so long, waited for so long, and still see no sign that God is answering?
Jesus offers a simple but powerful instruction in today’s Gospel: “Stay dressed for action and keep your lamps burning.”
These words speak directly to the heart that is growing weary of waiting.
Sometimes, the Christian journey feels like a long night. We pray for a breakthrough, but the situation remains unchanged. We struggle to provide for our families, fight to preserve our marriages, seek employment, or battle silently with disappointments that nobody understands. In such moments, it is tempting to lose hope and allow the light of faith to grow dim.
But Jesus reminds us that faithfulness is not measured only by what happens when we pray, but also by whether we continue trusting God when nothing seems to happen.
Keeping our lamps burning means continuing to pray when answers seem delayed, choosing forgiveness when resentment feels justified, loving when love is not returned, and doing what is right even when nobody appreciates our efforts.
It does not mean pretending that life is easy. It means refusing to let life’s difficulties extinguish our trust in God.
Today’s first reading offers another beautiful reminder. Through Christ, those who were once far away have been brought near to God. We are no longer strangers but members of God’s household. Therefore, we do not wait in darkness as abandoned people. We wait as children who belong to a loving Father.
Perhaps the most touching part of today’s Gospel is that the master, upon finding his servants awake, prepares himself to serve them. What a beautiful image of Christ’s love! The Lord we faithfully await is also the Lord who comes to serve us.
Dear friend, do not allow a season of silence to convince you that God has forgotten you. Keep praying. Keep loving. Keep serving. Keep believing.
Your night may be long, but do not let your lamp go out. Remain faithful, for the Lord is worth waiting for.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, strengthen my faith during seasons of waiting. When hope grows weak, renew my heart and keep my spiritual lamp burning. May I remain faithful until You come. Amen.
