Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Piero Pioppo as Apostolic Nuncio to Spain and the Principality of Andorra.

Archbishop Pioppo, previously serving in Indonesia and ASEAN, brings broad diplomatic experience, having also represented the Holy See in Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

Born in Savona, Italy, in 1960, Pioppo was ordained a priest in 1985 after earning a Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology.

He joined the Vatican diplomatic service in 1993, serving in Korea, Chile, and the Secretariat of State before assuming higher responsibilities.

In 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Prelate of the Institute for the Works of Religion, marking a significant step in his career.

Pope Benedict later named him Titular Archbishop of Torcello and Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea in January 2010.

He received his Episcopal Ordination in March 2010, beginning a new phase in his service as a senior diplomat of the Catholic Church.

Pope Francis appointed Pioppo Nuncio to Indonesia in 2017 and Nuncio to ASEAN the following year, expanding his regional influence.

Fluent in Italian, English, French, and Spanish, Archbishop Pioppo is well-equipped to strengthen relations between the Holy See and Spain.

His appointment underscores Pope Leo XIV’s commitment to fostering strong diplomatic ties with Spain and Andorra through seasoned and experienced representatives.
