Following the runway excursion involving an Enugu Air Embraer E170 (registration 5N-ENR) operating Flight 4264 from Lagos to Benin on July 23, 2026, aviation experts have urged the public to avoid prematurely describing the occurrence as a “plane crash.”
The aircraft reportedly overran the end of the runway after landing at Benin Airport and came to rest beyond the paved surface. Fortunately, all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has since launched an investigation to determine the cause of the occurrence.
According to aviation safety guidance, a runway excursion simply refers to an event in which an aircraft unintentionally leaves the runway during takeoff or landing. This may happen either by overrunning the end of the runway or by veering off its side. The term describes the nature of the event but does not, by itself, determine its official classification.
Experts explain that aviation occurrences are categorized as incidents, serious incidents, or accidents based on internationally accepted definitions. An accident generally involves fatalities, serious injuries, substantial aircraft damage, or the aircraft becoming missing or inaccessible. Until investigators establish whether any of these criteria apply, it is inaccurate to conclude that a runway excursion automatically amounts to a plane crash.
The ongoing NSIB investigation is expected to determine the official classification and identify the factors that contributed to the event. Aviation professionals note that such evidence-based investigations play a vital role in improving safety, ensuring that lessons are learned from every occurrence rather than relying on assumptions or speculation.
