Tuesday of the Twenty Ninth Week in Ordinary Time. Year II. Eph. 2:12-22; Luke 12:36-38
In a homily at a colleague’s funeral Mass some years ago, an elderly man of God reminded us that we practise death whenever we go to sleep. The only difference is that we WAKE UP after some hours when we sleep. This means that death is a lot deeper than sleep. We do not wake up from it, at least not in this life. Yet, as Christians, we believe that death does not have the final word, because Christ has opened the way to eternal life.
This is the depth of Christ’s gift to us. As St Paul reminds us in the first reading, Christ has brought us who were once far away near to God. He has broken down the barriers and divisions that separate us, making us members of God’s household. He has drawn us closer to life, becoming our peace and reconciling us to God and one another.
Friends, it is true that in our daily human struggles we are continually drawn into sin and death, but we must realise that just as sin reigned wherever there was death, so grace will reign to bring eternal life when we strive to live in righteousness through Jesus Christ. This is how DEEP Christ’s gift to us is.
It is in the light of this gift that Jesus calls us in the Gospel to STAY AWAKE, dressed for action. We must live in readiness, not knowing when the master will return. The Christ who has reconciled us to God calls us to live in a way that reflects the gift we have received, for the master will come at a day we do not know, at an hour we do not expect. May Christ our peace heal the divisions among us and cast off the darkness of sin in our lives. Amen.
Let’s continue to pray for our Nation as we struggle for a better Nigeria. God bless your day ahead.
