Wednesday of the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time. Year II. (Sts. Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Reflection by Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese)
Jer. 15:10,16-21; John 11:19-27
Today, the Universal Church Celebrates Sts. Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, friends and disciples of Jesus Christ. On the 26th day of the month of January, 2021, Pope Francis inscribed the new obligatory memorial of Saints Martha, Mary and Lazarus. While we usually celebrate St Martha on this day, we now celebrate her siblings as well. Pope Francis, and indeed the Church, wants us to pay attention to the “evangelical witness they offered in WELCOMING the Lord Jesus into their home, in LISTENING to him attentively, [and] in BELIEVING that he is the resurrection and the life”.
Friends, Mary, Martha and Lazarus stood with Jesus and never wavered. In today’s Gospel reading, we again experience the deep faith of Martha in Jesus Christ, believing him to be the resurrection and the life, and the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into the world. Mary was also a committed disciple who loved to learn at the feet of Jesus. And what about Lazarus? He was privileged to have been raised to life after four days in the grave. As we celebrate these siblings, may their love for Jesus Christ motivate us to welcome Jesus into our lives, to listen to him endlessly, and believe that he is indeed God, Amen.
