Thursday of the Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time. Year II (St. Monica)
1 Cor.1:1-9; Ps.144:2-7; Matt.24:42-51
Today, Jesus says to stand ready since the Son of Man is coming at an hour we do not expect. I remember when we were younger. The moment my Dad stepped out of the house, we became different kids. We would run around, play rough, make some noise, and do whatever else we weren’t supposed to do. But we always could hear the sound of his bike from miles away, and so we could always get back in character, with fake smiles on our faces, in time for his arrival.
Friends, we can’t afford to act like pretentious kids with God. Happy we shall be if God finds us at our duty posts, whether He comes in the morning, noon or evening. May we not be like the servant who went about beating his fellow servants, and eating and drinking with drunkards as though this world were his. Like St Monica, mother of St Augustine, we must stay awake, watching and praying with many tears. If not for Monica’s persistence and tenacity, who knows what would have become of her son Augustine? We must therefore remain at our duty posts, that God may find us ready whenever he comes.
