Thursday of the Twenty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time, Year II. I Cor.5:8-10; Lk 7:36-50
Sometimes, God’s merciful love to us sinners makes us want to shout “Wow! Thank God I’m a sinner”. However, this is obviously beside the point, since we must be careful so as not to take God’s mercy for granted. Looking carefully at today’s gospel reading, we realise that the woman who wept at the feet of Jesus did so out of remorse; a deep feeling of unworthiness at the divine presence of one greater than she could ever be; the one whose love first withstood death. She didn’t receive mercy because her sin was so great, but because she loved Jesus too much to allow her ‘sin-state’ push her away from love Himself.
Friends, it is God’s love that pushes us to respond in like manner. This is why St. Paul reminds the Corinthians in today’s first reading, that Jesus Christ suffered, died, was buried, rose and appeared to many, including himself, because of the love he has for us. If this love could move the heart of the woman who was publicly known as a sinner to show up, if this love could make ordinary men and women do extraordinary things in Jesus’s day, if this love could completely turn Saul to Paul, how much more me and you? It is time for us too to be transformed by this love, and extend same to one another. Are you with me?
