Every year on 23 July, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Saint Bridget of Sweden (1304–1373), one of Christianity’s most inspiring women. A devoted wife, loving mother of eight, mystic, and founder of a religious order, her life shows that holiness can be lived in every stage of life.
Born into a noble Swedish family, Bridget married Ulf Gudmarsson at the age of 13. Together they built a faith-filled family, and one of their children, Saint Catherine of Sweden, also became a saint. Despite her wealth, Bridget was known for her compassion toward the poor, widows, orphans, and the sick.
After her husband’s death in 1344, Bridget embraced a deeper life of prayer and joined the Third Order of Saint Francis. She later founded the Order of the Most Holy Saviour (Bridgettines), combining contemplative prayer with charitable service.
Bridget spent much of her later life in Rome, where she encouraged renewal within the Church and urged both religious and political leaders to live with integrity and justice. She also became widely known for her mystical visions, later collected in Revelations, which influenced Christian spirituality and sacred art for centuries.
She died in Rome on 23 July 1373 after returning from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and was canonised in 1391. In 1999, Pope Saint John Paul II declared her one of the Patron Saints of Europe, recognising her lasting contribution to the Church and Christian civilisation.
As the Church celebrates her feast today, the life of Saint Bridget invites every Christian to reflect on what it means to follow Christ wholeheartedly. She showed that marriage, parenthood, widowhood and public engagement can all become paths to holiness when lived with faith, humility and love. Her unwavering commitment to prayer, charity, justice and service reminds us that true discipleship is expressed not only in words but in compassionate action.
In a world often marked by selfishness, injustice and spiritual indifference, Saint Bridget’s example calls us to deepen our relationship with God, care for those in need, uphold truth with courage and remain faithful in every vocation. May her witness inspire us to seek holiness in our daily lives and become instruments of God’s love and peace wherever we are.
