Wednesday of the Twenty Fifth Week in Ordinary Time, Year II (Padre Pio of Pietrelcina). Prov 30:5-9; Luke 9:1-6
If Jesus were to come today, perhaps he would be disappointed by our lifestyle. What justification do we have to live luxurious lives when the flock of God is languishing? Today, Jesus tells the Twelve to travel light because he wanted them to take the good news far and wide, equipped with nothing, but the Gospel. Padre Pio, whose memorial we celebrate today understood what it meant to travel light. Materially, he had next to nothing. But what he lacked in earthly possessions, he gained in grace.
St. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, joined the monastery at 16 and was ordained Catholic priest at 23 years of age. For 50 years of his life, he had to bear intense pains and agony, since he was marked by the wounds of Jesus Christ (Stigmata). For 50 years, he sat painfully at the confessional and listened to the throng that came daily to see him. For 50 years, he stood on bleeding feet as he celebrated masses for God’s people. He was not rich in the eyes of the world, but he was perhaps one of the richest men that ever walked the face of the earth. Friends, if Padre Pio could travel light, why not me and you?
