The governor of Lagos State Babajide Sanwo-Olu in a briefing on the 25th of April, 2020 gave an order that families should pick up the bodies of loved ones in mortuaries in the state for funeral in the next two weeks.
This action is aimed at decongesting the facility following a restriction of funerals which lasted for two months due to the Coronavirus Pandemic and the period of Lent
He further stated that funerals must be carried out with strict compliance to rules on public gathering during this pandemic.
Attendees—mourners, family members and officiating ministers must not exceed twenty. They are also required to maintain social distancing, wear facemasks, wash their hands with soap and running water and not hold receptions after the ceremony.
The governor warned that bodies which are not claimed in the next two weeks will be subject to mass burial and appealed for the cooperation of all involved.
He also stated that he had ordered the release of 209 inmates of correctional centres in the state which is intended to decongest the prisons in view of the pandemic and also improve the criminal justice system in the country
