Throughout the history of salvation, God has chosen certain people to play special roles in His divine plan. Among all human beings, the Blessed Virgin Mary holds a unique and irreplaceable place. From the moment of her Immaculate Conception to her Assumption into Heaven, Mary has been at the heart of God’s saving work in Jesus Christ.
Mary’s “Yes” Changed the World
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, he announced the greatest news in human history—that she was chosen to be the Mother of the Savior. Mary’s humble and faith-filled response, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38), opened the door for the Word to become flesh.
Through her fiat (yes), God’s eternal plan of salvation entered human history. Without her cooperation, the Incarnation—the very mystery of God becoming man—would not have unfolded in this way.
Mary as the Mother of Jesus and Mother of the Church
Mary is not only the Mother of Jesus but also our spiritual Mother. At the foot of the Cross, Jesus entrusted Mary to all believers:
“Woman, behold your son… Behold, your mother.” – John 19:26–27
This shows her continuing role in God’s plan—not just in giving birth to Christ but in nurturing the Body of Christ, the Church, with her prayers and intercession.
Mary, the New Eve
In salvation history, Mary is often called the New Eve. Just as Eve’s disobedience brought sin into the world, Mary’s obedience brought salvation through Christ. St. Irenaeus beautifully said: “The knot of Eve’s disobedience was loosed by Mary’s obedience.”
Where Eve doubted, Mary trusted. Where Eve fell, Mary stood firm in faith.
Mary’s Ongoing Role in Our Salvation
Mary continues to play a vital role in our lives today. As our intercessor, she prays for us and leads us closer to her Son. The Wedding at Cana reveals this truth:
“Do whatever He tells you.” – John 2:5
Her maternal care guides us toward obedience to Christ, helping us receive the graces of salvation.
Mary’s Assumption and Hope for All Believers
Finally, Mary’s Assumption into Heaven is a sign of hope for all Christians. She shares fully in the glory of her Son and shows us the destiny awaiting all who remain faithful to God.
“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.” – Luke 1:46–47
Final Thought: The Blessed Virgin Mary is not just a figure of the past but a living mother in salvation history. Her faith, obedience, and intercession continue to inspire us and lead us to Jesus, the one Mediator between God and man. To understand salvation fully, we cannot ignore Mary—for through her, God chose to enter the world and redeem it. To honor Mary is not to take glory from Jesus but to magnify Him — just as Mary herself said: “My soul magnifies the Lord” (Luke 1:46).
