Jer.14:17-22; Matt.13:36-43
The tone of today’s first reading, and that of the psalm, is one of deep contrition. It’s one thing to stray, but it’s another ball game altogether to come to a realization that we’ve strayed. The consequences of sin and wrong doing are many; violence and war, famine, pestilence and diseases, hunger and strife… Only God can heal us from the lack of peace that sin brings.
I have seen persons who are motivated to do good because of the fear of hell. This is wrong. It’s love for God and appreciation for his goodness in our lives that should motivate us to do good. When we strive to remain good even in the midst of evil, we wouldn’t have to worry when the time comes to separate the wheat from the chaff. Friends, let us acknowledge our sinfulness today, that we may experience the full glare of God’s compassion.
