Fifth Sunday of Easter. Year A. Reflection by Rev Fr Oselumhense Anetor (Uromi Diocese). Acts 6:1-7; I Pet. 2:4-9; John 14:1-12
Nine years ago I was ordained deacon, and it certainly wasn’t so that I could distribute food daily to a group of widows… But wasn’t it? I believe that we sometimes forget why we were called. It is so that we can become willing servants of others. The nature of the service really does not matter. Thus, the first reading describes how men filled with the Holy Spirit were selected to be ‘servants’ so that the Apostles could pay undivided attention to God’s word and the prayers. Why were such Holy men called? Because only the Holy Spirit can push us to serve selflessly.
Friends, just how much of our time and energy are we willing to expend daily in our service of others? I often wonder. How can we be are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, if we’re not wiling and ready to declare the wonderful deeds of him who called us out of darkness into his marvellous light? In becoming true servants, we must therefore look to Christ who is the way, the truth and the life. Our calling as Christians would be useless if we do not find a way to become living and active stones of service, making up God’s house.
